Under standard Klondike rules, only a king or a valid sequence headed by a king can fill an empty tableau column. Clearing a column is useful only when it enables a worthwhile move.
Look underneath the king
If two kings are available, compare what moving each one reveals. A king covering a face-down card may unlock more information than one already standing alone. Also consider the queens you could place on it: a red queen needs a black king. An empty column is a resource, not a reason to move the first king you notice.
Try the steps
- Identify the kings that can legally move.
- Compare newly exposed cards and possible queen placements.
- Move the king that opens useful play, then reveal any newly uncovered card.
Should I delay every king move?
No. If only one legal king unlocks a hidden card, the choice may be clear. Draw rules and the remaining stock still matter; this heuristic does not make every deal winnable.
