Reduced Motion in Browser Games: What the Setting Can Change

Your device's reduced-motion preference lets compatible websites know that you prefer less nonessential animation. It does not automatically remove every moving effect inside every browser game.

The game must respond to the preference

MDN describes how websites can detect the preference through prefers-reduced-motion. A site's menus may honor it while an embedded game continues animating because it uses separate code. Look for in-game settings such as screen shake, background effects or animation intensity. Fullscreen and muted audio do not substitute for motion controls. Static logic puzzles may offer a calmer option, but preview the actual game rather than relying on its category.

Try the steps

  1. Enable the system motion preference using your device's accessibility settings.
  2. Check the game's own visual-effect options and change one at a time.
  3. Observe both menus and gameplay to see which effects changed.

Does reduced motion guarantee there will be no flashing?

No. Flashing and movement are different effects, and support varies. If an effect is uncomfortable, stop playing and choose another game; report the specific effect so the developer can assess it.
