Shikaku for Beginners: Solve Rectangles with Factor Pairs

Shikaku divides a grid into non-overlapping rectangles. Each rectangle contains exactly one clue, and its area in cells must equal that clue's number.

A six gives shapes, not a ready-made position

For a clue of 6, possible dimensions are 1×6, 2×3, 3×2 and 6×1. Each candidate placement must contain the clue, stay inside the grid and exclude every other clue. A number need not sit in the rectangle's corner. Near an edge, some placements disappear; another clue may eliminate more. List positions as well as dimensions before deciding a rectangle is forced.

Try the steps

  1. Start with clues that have few placements because of the border or neighboring clues.
  2. Reject any rectangle that overlaps a confirmed one or encloses a second number.
  3. After confirming a rectangle, revisit nearby clues and check that every remaining cell can still be covered.

Can I draw an L-shaped region with the correct area?

No. Standard Shikaku requires rectangles; the right cell count alone is insufficient. The finished grid must be completely covered without gaps or overlap. If stuck, compare all remaining placements for one clue instead of repeatedly drawing your first guess. Dragging, correction and hint controls depend on the particular game.
