Browsers may reduce timers and animation work in hidden tabs. A game stopping in the background can be normal resource management, but it is not a guaranteed pause or save.
Hidden does not mean the same thing to every game
A game can use page visibility to pause deliberately. The browser can also throttle background work, or the operating system may suspend it when you switch apps or lock a phone. Meanwhile, a server-based timer may keep running. These mechanisms are different, so silence and a frozen picture do not prove that a countdown, opponent or game session has stopped.
Try the steps
- Use the game's own pause control before leaving, if one is provided.
- Test tab switching on a disposable round before relying on it during a timed level.
- When returning, inspect the timer and board before acting; check whether the page resumed or restarted.
Does a background tab preserve my progress indefinitely?
No. A tab is not a backup, and the browser may discard it to free memory. Saving depends on the individual game's storage system. Finish an important round or use a documented save option before leaving; keeping the tab open alone does not guarantee recovery.
