Ludo Strategy: Choose a Token Before Chasing a Capture

In Ludo, the useful move is not always the longest advance. Compare the destination of every legal token move and the opponent's possible reply before choosing.

Count from the position after your move

Suppose one token can capture an opponent but finish four spaces ahead of another opposing token. Under a one-die rule, that second opponent could capture it with a four if the square is not protected. The capture gains progress against one rival but creates exposure to another. A token entering its own home column may be worth protecting instead. Safe squares, entry rolls, bonus turns and blockades vary between versions, so read the board's rules first.

Try the steps

  1. List which tokens may legally use the current roll; do not plan around a roll you have not received.
  2. For each destination, count possible opposing moves and check whether protection actually applies.
  3. Balance advancing a token near home with bringing another token into play when the rules permit.

Can this remove the luck from Ludo?

No. Dice still determine the available moves. The aim is to compare choices after a roll, not predict the next one. A capture is an option to evaluate, not an automatic priority; a safe-looking square can also change value when turn order changes.
