Near the finish, count legal steps rather than moving the token that looks closest. In rules requiring an exact finishing roll, a number larger than the remaining distance cannot finish that token.
Do not count the occupied square
If a token needs three steps to finish, the next square is step one; the square it currently occupies is not a step. A roll of four cannot be shortened to three under exact-roll rules. Check other tokens for legal moves, and use the game's highlighted options to confirm how its home lane works.
Try the steps
- Trace the token's correct entrance into its colored home lane.
- Count squares after its current position through the finish.
- Compare the roll with all movable tokens before selecting one.
What happens if no token can use the roll?
Follow the current version's rules; the turn may be skipped. Do not invent a bounce-back or partial move unless the game explicitly supports it. Entry requirements and bonus turns can also vary.
